If theatre/shows is you're thing, then you will be glad to know that you will be spoilt for choice in Merseyside with its many productions taking place all year round.

The Empire Theatre has all year round productions. Box office sizzlers such as the excellent Blood Brothers, Grease, Cats, Annie and many more top West End musicals grace the theatre's stage on a regular basis.

Other venues such as the Everyman and the Philharmonic Hall stage the cream of local writers and cutting edge drama, as well as popular national productions and top British comedy. The Everyman also has popular attached Bistro where a meal for two can cost as little as £20.

Liverpool Philharmonic Hall

The Philharmonic Hall (Hope Street) which has recently been fully refurbished to its original splendor attracts most top performers from all over the globe, weather it be Vanessa Mae or the Kinks, a splendid time is guaranteed for all (isn't that off some Beatles record?). Note: The Everyman and Philharmonic theatres give a lot back to their communities and in recent times been under financial pressure to 'tighten their belts', but have nevertheless continued to stage some great productions as well as giving local talent the opportunities to succeed in the industry. The Neptune Theatre is another good venue where you can see a variety of different acts ranging from children's productions like Sleeping Beauty to cutting edge comedy and music such as the eighties super group Squeeze. The theatre's aim is: 'to stage new talent and through this venue Liverpool audiences get a chance to see shows that otherwise only appear in London or at The Edinburgh Fringe Festival'.

If you prefer you're theatre radical and innovative, then the you'll love what the Unity Theatre has to offer. In its new building in in Hope Place, the Unity offers both performance and independent film at very affordable prices, with discounts for students and loads of special deals were you see many acts for just the one fee. An excellent night out can be had - believe me.

Liverpool Playhouse

The Playhouse Theatre (Williamson Square) is the oldest Repertory theatre in the UK (1865) and has in the past been a venue for the likes of legends such as: Noel Coward Rex Harrison, Cecil Parker, etc. The theatre today stages all the regular classics such as Chekhov's "The Seagull", through to contemporary drama, comedy and musicals. The theatre is now run by the Everyman Theatre group.

Floral Pavilion Theatre

Outside the city, there are even more theatres to choose from. The traditional Floral Pavilion Theatre based in New Brighton overlooks the promenade and has been keeping audiences thrilled for years. In Southport you can find the Floral Hall and in St Helens there is the wonderful Citadel Arts Centre.

Filming in the City
Liverpool is the most filmed city in the UK outside London. Because of the city's magnificent and somewhat varied forms of architecture, the city has doubled for other locations such as: London, Dublin, St Petersburg, Moscow and Venice. Various films include: 51st State, Chariots of Fire, In the Name of the Father, The Priest, Hunt for Red October and The Titanic. Several period based dramas using particular buildings to represent specific times in history have also used the city as well as endless television shows.
